The full title is Those Shocking Shaking Days: Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk 1970-1978. Now-Again Records presents the untold story of Indonesia’s various underground 70s musical scenes. This gem can be found as a deluxe “mini-LP” tip on sleeve CD or a 3 LP triple paste on gatefold. Included are extensive liner notes, photographs, ephemera in full color booklets and, of course, fully restored and remastered audio.
Now-Again Records presents a new, essential entry into the growing phenomenon known as Psych-Funk with Those Shocking Shaking Days: the untold story of Indonesia’s various underground 70s musical scenes.
Few are aware of the progressive music scenes from 1970s Indonesia, as censorship imposed by the dictator Suharto lead to crackdowns on those courageous enough to rebel. This insurgent sound - marked by relentless fuzz, over the top, politically charged lyrics, strong rhythms and a cranky low-fidelity - is as similar to that of Rare Earth protégés Power of Zeus as it is to that of South Korean psych-god Shin Jung Hyun. It is as informed by James Brown’s funk as it is by the hard, progressive rock of Deep Purple and King Crimson.
This anthology contains 20 tracks of hard, psychedelic, progressive rock and funk that has been largely unheard or ignored outside of the confines of this island nation. This is all thanks to the tireless (and expensive) research of Canadian hip hop producer and Southeast Asian music specialist Jason “Moss” Connoy, the trust that Indonesian rock legend Benny Soebardja placed in Now-Again Records as he traversed his homeland’s islands securing the necessary rights for the tracks contained within this anthology, and the cultural context added to the proceedings by Indonesian ex-pat Chandra Drews, who assisted in a track-by-track annotation.

For their pilot episode / volume 1, W_Music brings you the real ambassador of Reggae in Indonesia, not other than Ras Muhammad. Have been growing up in New York, Ras Muhammad is always being serious when he talks about his music and how he wants to keep people's point of view about Reggae into the right direction. Hosted by a friend of mine, Mr. Punang Adipradana, This 1st volume of W_music is an interesting piece to watch.
"Simple as that, basically like Humans cease to be humans if they don't listen to music"
Just heard this song "Streets Without Signs" couple minutes ago, and i'm all ears to this band. You can check out this band on Sinjitos's official blog page here.
"Like their hometown Jakarta, Roman Foot Soldiers is a blend of many eccentric musical characters. Such contrasts however didn’t produce a clash of creativity, but it did inspire the group to pursue a sound unique enough to satisfy all band members’ appetite.
As for the name of the band, it represents both their fascination for epic war films and solidarity. Six distinct pieces brought together by a common cause: a passion for music. "
Check out this performance of The Tielman Brothers in 1960.

One of the coolest Indonesian Rock & Roll Band at their time (the 50-60s), The Tielman Brothers. The Tielman Brothers were the first Dutch Indo band that successfully went international in the 1950s. They were one of the pioneers of rock and roll in The Netherlands. The band was quite famous in Europe, long before The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
"The musical journey of the Tielman Brothers started in Surabaya in 1945, where the four brothers and a younger sister, Jane, often performed. They inherited their musical ability from their father, Herman Tielman, an army captain KNIL, who used to play music with friends at home in Surabaya."
This song has been repeatedly played in my music player since couple weeks ago. The song is called "Love Song" by Bayu Risa. After previously known as a member of Pasto, on October 2010 Bayu Risa will release his debut solo album under the Label Sinjitos Studio. Sinjitos is known for their artists such as Santamonica, Monkey to Millionaire, etc. And as you can see, the result is extremely good electro sound in my opinion.
Bayu Risa's upcoming album is surely on my list of the most anticipated album in 2010. News from Sinjitos, On one of the track from the album, Bayu Risa will do a collaboration with Rayi Putra of RAN (who recently worked with Electronic Groove).
Indonesia based electro rock band which consists of Dhyda Maryudha (vocals), Adhe Arrio (guitars/controller), Rayan (bass), and Dimas (drums) has just released their debut album. Check out the video promo above. Make sure you buy their debut album, "Somewhere, Someone". Available on most music store in Jakarta.
One of the most anticipated album of the year from Indonesia's diva Dira Sugandi, "Something About the Girl" has been released on March 2010. Make sure that you buy this album cause Dira's voice and Incognito's Bluey (who is producing) makes it a Must Have!
All is good on this album, but you must listen to "Inside Love", "Let's Go Back (Feat. Omar)", "Get Through To You", and also "Daydream"
Listen to this band, The Temper Trap. An Australian band who consists of Dougy Mandagi (Vocals), Lorenzo (Guitars), Jonathon (Bass), and Toby (Drums). The Band starts when Dougy and Toby worked on the same Store. And in 2008, their song "Sweet Disposition" has been a great hit in Australian radios.
Their song "Sweet Disposition" was also appeared on the original soundtrack album of the movie (500) Days of Summer (which is a very good soundtrack album, the best soundtrack album in the year 2009 in my opinion). In October 2009, they appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel Live, to performed their hit song, "Sweet Disposition" Live.
"The Temper Trap, lead by frontman Dougy, have been writing and touring Australia, catching the ears of many, including world renowned producer Jim Abiss who made the journey to melbourne to assist the Temper Trap in delivering their debut record. With a series of epic new tracks set for release on their much anticipated debut album, the band has conquered adventurous new territory, building on their rich foundations in a natural progression. Legendary Artic Monkey's and Kasabian Producer Jim Abiss flew over to Melbourne to be at the helm. The Results of this brilliant new evolution in sound will persuasively draw you in. The Temper Trap have undeniably delivered."
For your info, their Vocalist, Dougy, is an Indonesian. So, as fellow indonesians, i'm so proud to see Indonesian musician like him to be in a great band. The Temper Trap is busy scheduled to perform in many shows such as in London (which the ticket is sold out), Paris, Berlin, USA, etc. Hopefully they will come to Jakarta sometime.
Their album is now available on iTunes, and aksara bookstore.
